Everything You Need to Know About Fillers

So you’re thinking about getting fillers… Let’s talk about what they’re not: permanent. The fillers that we treat with can last anywhere from about 3 months to over two years! Most fillers that we use are also formulated using a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid, which is found in your body naturally! As we age, our faces tend to lose volume and fullness which leads to unwanted wrinkles and lines. This loss of volume is oftentimes because our bodies are not producing as much collagen or hyaluronic acid as they did in the past.

Injectable fillers are widely becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments performed today. In fact, they’re the second fastest growing cosmetic procedure in the United States. It’s no surprise to us here at Kentucky Dermatology and Cosmetic Specialists, due to the versatility and customization that fillers can provide to glam up your look. There were over 6 MILLION Americans injected in the past year alone, which is almost a 40 percent increase compared to last year according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  Kentucky Dermatology and Cosmetic Specialists is happy to be apart of this statistic with thousands of our patients who have received our expert care for their Botox, Dysport, and Filler needs!

Injectable fillers can essentially be used anywhere on the lower half of the face, beginning below the eyebrows (as seen in the diagram). Since injectable fillers are so customizable, there are ample amount of treatment options to treat each and every patient’s individual needs! Our most popular areas to treat with filler are the lips, perioral lines (vertical lines around lips), nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, and cheeks. With so many places to inject with fillers, there are also different types of fillers to suit each and every concern. Fillers can come in a variety of consistencies, ranging anywhere between firm for those deep lines to something softer for fluffy, voluptuous, lips.

Know Your Options

The different types of fillers we offer are Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Refyne, Defyne, and Sculptra. Unlike our hyaluronic acid based fillers, Sculptra is formulated to stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production with poly-L-lactic acid and works deep within the skin to restore the volume over time for results that can last over 2 years. Sculptra is typically injected in the cheekbone area to fill in sunken cheeks that have lost volume due to aging. The variations between fillers are very similar to Coke and Pepsi in a way – because they’re very similar in composition. The basic differences are between longevity and density, which is how we decide what to use and when.

Here’s a quick idea of what fillers are used for and where:

For a smooth, plush, pillowy effect in the lips, cheeks, and lines.

Best for lifting and contouring the cheek area, hence the word “volum” meaning it’ll give you that extra volume you need!

Restylane/Restylane Lyft/Restylane Silk

Great for all over volume – it can be used in the cheeks and lips. Lyft is used in the cheek area and provides an extra lift to sunken cheeks. Silk is perfect for smooth and silky lips and the lines around your lips.

Perfect for smoothing out those expression lines from smiling and for a light plump in your lips.

A more dense filler that’s best for treating deeper expression lines around the mouth area.

A unique filler in its own class that is great for rebuilding collagen in the cheekbone area.

Do Your Research on the Providers

With over 100+ years of combined experience, board-certified accreditations and a niche for exceptional patient care, Kentucky Dermatology and Cosmetic Specialists take pride in the expert skin care that we provide. Before letting someone touch your skin (because it’s the only one you’ve got) it’s always best to check their reputation and experience. If an office or Medispa is offering something that seems too good to be true, it more than likely is, so always ask questions beforehand!

Schedule a Consultation

During your complimentary consultation, your medical history will be reviewed and your aesthetic goals will be discussed so that we can formulate the perfect plan to achieve your skincare goals. After establishing which treatment would be ideal for your goals, our experts will discuss how to prep before (no blood thinners, alcohol, fish-oil for two weeks prior) and what to expect the day of. To get a good idea of the patient results and who you’re seeing, don’t hesitate to ask for before and after photos from previous filler patients along with about how many patients are treated with filler on a weekly basis! This will ensure that their results are good and will show their experience with the procedure.
