Most of us have accidentally flipped our front camera around on our cell phone and saw the unflattering and shocking view of the dreaded DOUBLE CHIN and quickly looked away! Or, maybe you have seen a picture of yourself from the side and saw your profile from a different angle. Don’t, worry. Certain people are simply predisposed, and genetic submental fullness can’t be resolved by lifestyle or diet alone. There is a non-surgical, FDA approved treatment for this, KYBELLA® !
What is Kybella?
Destroying excess fat with an injection sounds like a dream come true right?! Kybella is designed to do just that. Kybella works by killing fat cells. It directly targets the fat cells in the area it’s injected in. Here’s how it works: The drug is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is naturally produced by your body to aid in the breakdown of dietary fat. In this case, though, it’s injected through the muscle into the submental fat layer beneath your chin. Within minutes, the acid kills the cells through a process known as lysis; in the weeks that follow, your immune system will naturally (and permanently!) dispose of the cellular debris.
Your treatment provider will examine your chin to determine how many treatments you will need. A small number of patients may need only one treatment but most require 2-3 full treatments. A topical numbing cream is applied prior to marking your chin with a grid for the injection points. The procedure itself only takes about 15-20 minutes.
What to expect after the procedure:
Though Kybella is nonsurgical, some common side effects include pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness. The recovery process associated with Kybella is minimal in most cases, and downtime varies from person to person. Minor side effects typically subside in one to two weeks.
Serious side effects have occurred, including facial muscle weakness, uneven smile, trouble swallowing, or nerve injury in the jaw. Any post-treatment discomfort should be discussed with your healthcare provider. If you experience any of these severe side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
How long until I’ll see results from Kybella?
For a well-executed Kybella injection treatment, results should begin to be seen in about 5–6 weeks with a continuation of the results lasting up to 12 weeks.
How long will my Kybella results last?
Once Kybella destroys fat cells, they’re gone and won’t be replaced. When you’ve achieved your desired results, you shouldn’t need more treatments unless you gain weight, since the remaining fat cells can expand.
What is recovery like for Kybella?
Right after your appointment, you should be able to drive home or go to work, the same as you would if you got a flu shot. Although, since swelling is the most significant side effect, your best decision is to go home and ice your neck.
You won’t be limited in any activities, but depending on your swelling and tenderness, you might want to avoid exercising until it’s more comfortable. Some side effects can last as few as two days or up to three weeks according to doctors. It all depends on how your body responds to Kybella.
KYBELLA is right for you if:
- You’re bothered by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness
- You don’t want surgery
- You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are
- You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away
